Diastrophic Dysplasia Growth ChartsDiastrophic Dysplasia affects about 1 in 100,000 births.DTD is an autosomal recessive dyspasia which
affects cartilage and bone development. The term "diastrophic" is Greek and means "crooked".
Although diastrophic dysplasia occurs in most countries, the highest prevalence is found in Finland (1 in 33,000) where the carrier rate in the population is 1 – 2%.
Affected individuals have short stature with very short arms and legs and joint problems that restrict mobility.
There is no cure for diastrophic dysplasia, and treatment will vary on a case to case basis depending on the specific expression of symptoms.
Common treatments might include surgeries to improve mobility, physical therapy, braces and other support devices such as canes, walkers or wheelchairs.
